Q: Grandma, my jaw is swollen and there is a hole in my tooth. How can I stop the pain and the swelling? I don’t have immediate access to a dental clinic.

A: Dear M, You can do some things to get relief from the pain which must be really terrible. However, the problem about your tooth definitely has to be brought to a dentist. The sooner you do that, the better it will be for you. In the meantime, for the pain and the swelling, you can try some things from Grandma’s home remedies.

HOME REMEDIES FOR DENTAL EMERGENCIES

1. Cloves – Cloves have been used as a home remedy for toothaches for decades because of the spice’s antiseptic properties. It also has a numbing effect which helps relieve pain. You can chew on a clove or apply clove oil to the tooth cavity.

2. Garlic - Garlic is a natural pain remedy. Apply crushed garlic to the tooth. This is one of the easiest home remedies for dental emergencies.

3. Lime - You can use lime to reduce toothache pain. Just swab the tooth with a slice of lime.

4. Salt and ginger - Make a paste by mixing salt, ginger powder and water. Rub this on the swollen gum.

5. Essence of rose flower – Combine 50 grams of essence of rose flower with the juice of half a lemon. Stir thoroughly. Place the mixture on the irritated area and hold it for as long as you can. Repeat several times to reduce pain and swelling.

6. Tea tree oil – Get quick relief from tooth and gum pain by rubbing tea tree oil, preferably organic, directly on the affected area. Tea tree oil also assists in reducing swelling and pain in gums.[1]

7. Baby aspirin – Insert a piece of baby aspirin into the hole of your tooth. Crush some baby aspirin and rub on the decayed area. Use orange colored aspirin which is pleasantly flavored. The simplest of home remedies for dental emergencies, baby aspirin is probably already in your medicine chest.

8. Tea bag - Use a cold wet tea bag as a cold compress. Apply directly on the affected tooth.

9. Table salt and warm water – Add a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm (not hot) water. Allow the salt to dissolve then use the water to rinse your mouth, spitting out the water after your mouth has been thoroughly rinsed.

10. Whiskey or Brandy – Take a cotton ball or a Q tip and dip it into whiskey or brandy then place it on the affected area. Repeat as often as necessary till you can your dentist can see you.[2]

11. Baking soda and water – Make a paste using baking soda and water then apply to the affected area. Brush your teeth after.

12. Aloe Vera – Just massage the affected area with aloe gel.

13. Onion – Place a piece of onion on the affected area. This is one of the most convenient home remedies for dental emergences because you just have to take a piece from what you have in your chiller.

14. Lime – Slice a lime and apply the juice to the affected area.[4]

15. Ice pack – Take an ice pack and hold it over the affected area for five minutes then keep it off for five minutes. Repeat this sequence for half an hour or more.

16. Oil Of Oregano - Mix a few drops of oregano oil with a bit of olive oil, then saturate a cotton ball with mixture. If you prefer, you can replace the olive oil with lukewarm water.

17. Apple Cider Vinegar - Soak a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar (ACV) and hold it in place. Ordinary household vinegar will work too.[5]
